Vivian’s Lounge – Before & After
From an uninspired bonus room to an elegant & inviting lounge!

Last spring, a client approached me with a unique but challenging space. It was a non-functional bonus room, originally a dining room, and the client was looking for a space that offered lounge seating. Her design style was mostly clean-lined and modern with very little embellishments. However, on a recent trip to London, she was inspired by a restaurant that had a very modern aesthetic with a few Baroque-inspired elements.
We worked on compiling the pieces that would be comfortable, inexpensive and attain just the right balance of the two styles. The color scheme we created was a melding of the earthy taupes with punches of kiwi and white that are found in the rest of the house. It was important to make this room stand apart but also complement the adjoining rooms. Most of the furniture is from West Elm. The mirror and accent pillows are from Brocade Home. The client found the crystal chandelier at Z Gallerie.
The three wall panels are the most unique feature of the space. After seeing a concept in a magazine, we purchased bi-fold doors from a hardware store, took them apart, applied wallpaper to the front and painted the edges to match the background color of the wallpaper. This project only required one double roll of the beautiful Osborne & Little flocked damask wallcovering. Since the walls already had a builder standard orange peel texture applied, it would have been very expensive and time consuming to prime for wallcovering. Not to mention the permanence of wallcovering. This allows the homeowner to enjoy the aesthetics of a beautiful wall treatment but in a more modern application and with less of a commitment.
Next we carried the darker taupe accent paint from the two-story living room into the upstairs space on both walls in order to provide the right backdrop for the mirror and the wall panels. The finishing touches include antique glass accesssories and a soft floral arrangement.
I checked in on the homeowner recently and she is still extremely pleased with the result while compliments from friends & family continue to pour in!
